Meyer T. Hanna Arendt

Meyer T. Hanna Arendt

Author Meyer T.
Title Hanna Arendt
Description Thomas Meyer’s biography of Hannah Arendt presents her through exile and intellectual labour born from the personal catastrophe of the twentieth century. Arendt was born into a Jewish family in Germany and entered the world of German philosophy at an early stage. After her arrest in 1933, she fled to Paris, where she helped Jewish youth and worked to protect cultural heritage. These chapters of her life long stood in the background, although they help explain her later books.

Meyer reconstructs Arendt’s path from European exile to life in the United States, where her reflections took finished form in The Origins of Totalitarianism. Her bond with Martin Heidegger receives special attention. His acceptance of Nazism became for Arendt a personal wound and a philosophical test.

Using new archival documents, Meyer shows how Arendt’s thought came from loss and from a persistent need to understand the world.
