In a series of sketches about late Soviet and post-Soviet life, the autobiographical narrator reflects on the involuntary emancipation of women from working-class and peasant families who left the countryside for Moscow. Like her friends, Katya’s mother does not fully recognise the pressures of the patriarchal order and does not seek to resist it. She does not dream of education or a career, but wants to escape poverty and cramped living conditions and build a different, more prosperous family according to familiar conventions. An incomplete separation becomes the shared fate of mother and daughter. The mother repeatedly returns to the village, to her parents and the forest, while circumstances keep pushing the daughter back to a place where she no longer belongs. Reflecting on both the desire and the inability to detach herself from people and ideas that pull her down, the narrator comes to see herself as a restless fruit that has rolled far from the tree professionally, while in her personal life remaining entangled in her mother’s roots. Katya Krylova is a writer, curator, art historian and theorist of contemporary culture, and the author of The Market of Convenient Animals (New Literary Observer, 2023).
