Azar I. My kachali lodku

Azar I. My kachali lodku

Author Azar I.
Title My kachali lodku
Description For twenty years, journalist Ilya Azar has regularly written about people whose outrage at the existing order and government policies spilled into the streets and sometimes forced officials to make concessions. This book brings together his reports from protests in Moscow’s Triumfalnaya and Pushkin Squares, Kyiv’s Maidan, Minsk’s Independence Square, and many other cities and countries. Each story is accompanied by Azar’s memories and reflections as he tries to understand why civil society ultimately failed to stop Russia’s transformation into an authoritarian state that went to war against its neighbour.

Ilya Azar is a Russian journalist and former correspondent for Novaya Gazeta, Meduza, and Lenta.ru. After being elected as a municipal deputy in Moscow, Azar organised pickets and rallies in the city in 2019–2020. In 2025, he was added by Russia’s Ministry of Justice to its register of “foreign agents” and sentenced in absentia to four years in a penal colony for organising the activities of an “undesirable organisation”. He lives in exile and continues to report on protests abroad.
